Brief descriptions are provided below for many of the defined Lines and a few Lu Lines.

Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, but errors can occur. For each Line, additional information about the family tree is available by contacting us. Our information is constantly being updated as a result of research, and a description many not reflect the latest research results.

Line 1: Bartholomew Meates


This Line is the descendants of Bartholomew Meates, born about 1790, who died in 1872 in Dublin, Ireland at the age of 82, and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin, Ireland. Bartholomew married Elizabeth unknown, and they had three(3) identified children. Further information has only been found for the son Bartholomew. The children and their birth dates are:

The son Bartholomew married Henrietta Margaret Dunbar in Dublin, Ireland on March 18, 1863 in the Church of Ireland Parish Church of St. Peter's, Dublin.

Henrietta had been born March 13, 1840 and christened on March 29, 1840, Santry, Dublin, Ireland.

Bartholomew and Henrietta had 9 identified children, of which 6 lived to adulthood. The children's names and birth are shown below.

Some of the children were born in County Dublin, and the others in County Wicklow. The family immigrated to Canada in 1882.

One son, Richard Frederick Meates later emmigrated in 1915 from Canada to the US, where he married Minnie Nevitt. They had one son, Richard Frederick Meates, born November 26, 1916.

There are only 2 surviving known persons with the Meates surname for this Line, and they reside in the USA. There is also a few descendents with the Grieve surname. Descendents of Harold Meates, the only son of William Henry Meates, took on the Grieve surname in the 1900's, after Harold's ex-wife married a Grieve. Harold had two sons and two daughters. Descendents of the first son match the Meates DNA result, and the only male descendent of the second son does not match. No other descendents from the 6 adult children of Bartholomew and Henrietta Meates have yet been found. In addition, there are no surviving males with the Meates surname in this line. The last male Meates for this Line died on December 8, 2001.



Line 3:   William Meates

This Meates line is descendents of William Meates, a carpenter, born before 1810. William married unknown, and they had one identfied child, Thomas Meates. It is estimated that Thomas was born before 1835.

On November 7, 1853, Thomas Meates married Anne Meates in the Church of Ireland Parish Chuch of St. Peters, Dublin. Anne had previously been married to an Elders. The groom, Thomas, had achieved the position of Organ Builder at the time of his marriage.

Thomas and Anne had 3 identified children:

The son William became a church pipe organ builder. He worked for Telford & Telford Cathedral Organ Builder, Dublin and then Jardine Organ Builders in New York, and then back to work at Telford.

William married his second cousin, Mary Ann Taylor, in 1891 and they had 6 children:

William

William (born 1854) eventually took over the Teleford firm, and later retired leaving 4 of his sons as equal partners. One son, William, did not follow in his father's footsteps. The son William enlisted for WWI, instead of taking his apprenticeship.

Today this Line is primarily still in Ireland, with a branch in Wales, another branch in Australia, a few descendents in England, and one descendent born in Ireland is currently in the US.

Research is currently in process in parish registers in Ireland to take this line back more generations.



Line 4:   John Mietts


This line is descended from John Mietts, born before 1745. John married Hannah Gabb at St. Helen's, Worcester on January 25, 1768. He stated his occupationn to be a carpenter. His surname was spelled as Mietts on both his marriage license allegation and the marriage bond.

John and Hannah had one identified child, whose baptism is recorded in the Parish Register as Thomas Mates at Claines, Worcestershire, on Feb 7, 1769, and had been born Dec. 9, 1768.

The surname for this Line evolved to Meates.

Thomas married Elizabeth Landers on May 22, 1793, at St George, Hanover Square, Middlesex. In the Parish Register Thomas's surname is recorded as Meates. The surname of his children was recorded at their baptism as either Mates or Meates.

Thomas and Elizabeth had six(6) identified children:

The mother Elizabeth Meates was buried January 9, 1809.

Thomas Meates then married a second time, Sep 2, 1809 to Mary Clapham at St Margarets, Westminster, Middlesex. Thomas and Mary had the following children:

Thomas Meates (b 1768) was employed for about 11 years as a servant to the Marquis of Titchfield, and later to General Harris. In his career, he also worked for Lord Castlereagh, and the East India Company. He became a King's Messenger on December 25, 1807, and made many trips to foreign locations carrying dispatches. Thomas died November 22, 1836.

The son Thomas Meates married Mary Anne Arrowsmith on May 1, 1823 at the Parish Church of St. George, Hanover Square, Middlesex, England. The couple had one identified child, Thomas William Meates, born 1824 in Prussia.

Thomas William married Harriet Winter Petch in 1856. They had 9 identified children:

In the 1881 UK Census, Thomas William Meates is shown as an East India Merchant. At that time, he was a widow, and he and his family lived in Wimbledon, Surrey, and had 6 servants. Thomas William died in 1905, at the age of 81.

For some reason Thomas Arrowsmith Meates came to believe that the surname was originaly Meautys, and he and his two sons changed their name to Meautys.

There are no males surviving today from this branch of the tree. The sons of Thomas Arrowsmith Meates were killed in WW I, and the only grandson died as a result of injuries from WW II.

The son Charles Lowe Meates married Elizabeth Barrell, who was born about 1809. Their five(5) identified children are:

Charles Lowe Meates and his family emmigrated to Australia in October 1852, aboard the Scindian. His emmigration may have been precipitated by his bankruptcy filing in 1851.

Charles Lowe Meates was a grocer and oil man, per The Times, London. According to The Times, he filed for bankruptcy due to very large medical bills and the loss of 2 patrons. The bankruptcy was later annulled in 1875.

Many descendents of this line reside today in Australia. Efforts are being made to identify and count these descendents.


The son George Meates went to Maracaibo, Gran Colombia about 1821. At the time Thomas Meates, the King's Messenger, made out his will in August 1836, he had not heard from George in years.

The son William Clapham Meates was married on Febuary 3, 1842 to Harriet Latchford. They had the following children:

There are no known surviving males from this branch of Line 4.



Line 5:   William Meates


William Meates was born about 1815 in Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. On January 11, 1836 he enlisted at the age of 20 in the 85th Buck's Light Infantry. He married Charlotte Nash, and they had seven(7) identified children:

Quite a few descendents of this line exist today, and they reside in England and Wales. One descendent has migrated to the USA, where she has married and had children.



Line 7:   Thomas Mates


Thomas and Sarah Mates had one identified child, William, who was born approximately 1817, in County Wicklow, Ireland. On William's death certificate his parents are shown as Thomas Mates and Sarah Radford.

In 1838, William Mates married Eleanor Hodgins, per a Marriage License Bond taken out in the Church of Ireland, Diocese of Ossory, of which only the index to these bonds survive at the Genealogical Office in Dublin.

William and Ellen had 7 identified children:
Sarah, born about 1839, who stated she was born in County Kilkenny on her marriage certificate
William Henry, believed to have been born in County Kilkenny, and to have died
Ellen, believed to have been born in County Kilkenny, and to have died
Eliza Ann, born 1844, who stated she was born in County Wicklow on her marriage certificate
Maria, born about 1849, who stated she was born in Bristol on her marriage certificate
Thomas, born about 1851, who stated he was born in Dublin on his marriage certificate
William Anthony Meates, born 1857 in Australia

William Meates emmigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1853 aboard the Prince Arthur. In 1855, his wife Ellen and their children, Sarah, Eliza Ann, Maria, and Thomas, joined him in Australia, having made the journey on the Eagle.

Sarah married John Collier, and remained in Australia, as did her brother Thomas. (Thomas used the surname Mates.)

William and his wife, Ellen, and the son William Anthony later immigrated to New Zealand. Two daughters, Maria (m. Wells) and Eliza Ann (m. Davis), also immigrated to New Zealand.

The son William Anthony Meates then married Rose O’Flaharty in 1891, and their children were: William Hugh, Mary Ellen, John Thomas, Francis Bollard (Frank), and Vincent James (Vince). William Anthony lived on the West Coast, and over time, his children spread out over New Zealand.

The entire identified Meates population in New Zealand are all members of Line 7. There were 58 Meates on the 1998 New Zealand voter registration list, and numerous other descendents from the female side. In the 1998 Australian elector rolls there are 4 Meates from Line 7 registered in Australia, as well as descendents from Sarah Meates Collier. Work is on going to identify and count all the descendents of Line 7. Line 7 is the only Meates line to pronounce Meates as Mates.



Line 9:   Leonard Meates


Leonard Meates was born before 1817, and his occupation was a slator. He married Maria, and they had three(3) identified children:

The son William became a bookbinder, and married Margaret Shields on June 6, 1864, at the Dublin Registration Office. He lived at 26 Camden Street, Dublin, at the time of his marriage. William and Margaret had two(2) identified children:

In 1891, William, the son, married Anne Kane.

Descendents of this Line reside in Ireland and England today.




Line unknown:   Margaret Meates


Margaret Meates was born about 1819-1824. In Ireland, she attended the Celbridge Charter School, run by the Incoporated Society for Promoting English Protestant Schools in Ireland.

Margaret immigrated to Australia aboard the Boadicea, which arrived in Hobart Town on February 4, 1836. Margaret then had 2 children before her marriage to John Charlton on the June 8, 1842. After the marriage, they had 5 additional children. The children are:
